Who counters Garen — hardest matchups & how to play them

The toughest lane matchups for Garen on the Wild Rift China server, with why each is hard and exactly how to play it.

VayneGaren vs Vayne Hard counter

Why Vayne counters Garen: The classic: percent damage and kiting against a melee with no reliable gap closer. Your Q reaches her one time in ten; the other nine she dances around you.

How to play Garen into Vayne: Let her push and call gank after gank: before her 3 items she dies in two seconds. Q is for breaking kiting, not for opening from range. Build tanky with movement speed and enter fights from the side, never the front.

→ Vayne
TeemoGaren vs Teemo Hard counter

Why Teemo counters Garen: The blind cancels your only damage pattern (Q plus attacks), the poison keeps your passive switched off, and his range is enough to kite your run.

How to play Garen into Teemo: At levels 1-3 you are stronger: force the all-in BEFORE he buys his first items. Then farm outside his range and wait: one root from an ally and your R deletes him.

→ Teemo
GnarGaren vs Gnar Unfavorable

Why Gnar counters Garen: As Mini he kites you, as Mega he matches you: your Q reaches him but his hop puts him back out of range before your E finishes spinning.

How to play Garen into Gnar: Trade with E ONLY while his hop is on cooldown. Punish the moments he drops out of Mega with zero rage. Your R finishes what his escape leaves at half health.

→ Gnar
KayleGaren vs Kayle Unfavorable

Why Kayle counters Garen: Before 5 you bully her, but every minute after 9 her range and R turn the lane into a zone where you no longer exist.

How to play Garen into Kayle: Snowball the first 5 levels: dive with your jungler — two kills and the game is set. Push your team to close before her third item, or she becomes everyone's problem.

→ Kayle
DariusGaren vs Darius Skill matchup

Why Darius counters Garen: The duel of lane kings: he wins extended trades with the bleed, you win hit-and-run with Q and W. Decided by whoever mistimes first.

How to play Garen into Darius: Q, attack, out — BEFORE the third bleed stack. Use W exactly on his pull (E). At even levels never fight while his R is up: yours executes, his resets.

→ Darius

Who to play with Garen — best team synergies

The champions Garen works best alongside on the Wild Rift China server, lane by lane, with the reason each pairing works.

Best Jungle partners for Garen

Garen + Jarvan IV Best pairing

Your problem isn't winning the duel, it's reaching it: with no dash, everyone just walks away. Cataclysm (R) throws a wall around the target and locks them in with you, long enough to silence with Decisive Strike (Q) and grind with Judgment (E).

Garen + Rammus Best pairing

Frenzying Taunt (E) forces their carry to stand still hitting Rammus, who can't finish them alone: you walk up, silence them and hold them inside Judgment (E). Powerball (Q) covers the ground your kit simply can't.

Garen + Amumu Strong

Judgment (E) only pays off if the target stays inside the spin for every tick, and on your own you have no way to keep them there: Curse of the Sad Mummy (R) pins the group for 1.5 seconds, and they come out with shredded armour.

Garen + Warwick Strong

Blood Hunt (W) tags the nearest champion and its bonuses surge to 150% under 35% health: those are exactly the targets Demacian Justice (R) executes. Infinite Duress (R) hands one over suppressed and motionless, with nothing to dodge.

Garen + Xin Zhao Situational

Crescent Guard (R) knocks everyone back except his marked target: it's the 1v1 your kit asks for, built inside a teamfight. It only works if he marks the same person you want, or it shoves away the target you were about to execute.

Best Mid partners for Garen

Garen + Galio Best pairing

You have no engage: you always wait for someone else to start the fight. Hero's Entrance (R) brings the fight to you instead, with a knock-up on their whole group and a shield on you, and Shield of Durand (W) taunts whoever was leaving Judgment (E).

Garen + Lissandra Strong

Frozen Tomb (R) freezes the target on the spot and Ring of Frost (W) roots them first: for someone who catches nobody without a dash, an enemy who can't move is worth more than any damage. You walk over and close with Demacian Justice (R).

Garen + Twisted Fate Strong

You spend the game in a side lane: Destiny (R) reveals the whole map, tells you when three of them are rotating on you, and teleports him over to help. The Gold Card from Pick a Card (W) is 1.25 seconds of a target waiting for you.

Garen + Annie Strong

With Pyromania (P) charged, any spell she casts is a full one-second stun: that's the freeze-frame you use to close the gap you can't dash across. Then Summon: Tibbers (R) keeps hitting even if she dies, while you grind with Judgment (E).

Garen + Veigar Situational

Event Horizon (E) is the cage that removes kiting: anyone who touches the edge stops, and you walk in, which is the only way you ever get in. Veigar sits under a 46% win rate in China, so pick him only if that's your recurring problem.

Best Duo (ADC) partners for Garen

Garen + Ashe Best pairing

Frost Shot (P) slows with every hit: with no real dash, a permanently slowed enemy is literally how you get there. Enchanted Crystal Arrow (R) opens from half a map away and leaves you a motionless target to execute.

Garen + Kalista Best pairing

She lends you the gap closer you don't have: Fate's Call (R), when you are her Oathsworn, hurls you into their team, knocking up everyone you hit. You land in the middle with Judgment (E) ready instead of walking through their damage for ten seconds.

Garen + Jhin Strong

Deadly Flourish (W) roots anyone who has just taken damage from an ally: the moment you touch someone with Decisive Strike (Q), Jhin can pin them where they stand. And a rooted target eats every tick of Judgment (E), not just the first.

Garen + Draven Strong

Judgment (E) shreds the armour of anyone who stays in the spin, and Draven is pure physical auto-attack damage: whatever you strip, he cashes in. Meanwhile Stand Aside (E) knocks back and slows whoever was stepping out of your range.

Best Support partners for Garen

Garen + Sona Best pairing

Song of Celerity (E) keeps movement speed on you all game long, and movement speed is exactly what your kit lacks. Crescendo (R) then stuns their whole line: two motionless seconds is a full Judgment (E) plus the execute.

Garen + Nami Strong

Tidecaller's Blessing (E) adds magic damage and a slow to your next hits, including the one empowered by Decisive Strike (Q): suddenly nobody walks away from you. Aqua Prison (Q) and Tidal Wave (R) are two separate knock-ups on top.

Garen + Leona Strong

You bring no crowd control to the team, so you have to borrow hers: Zenith Blade (E) roots, Shield of Daybreak (Q) stuns and Solar Flare (R) extends the chain. Those are the seconds Judgment (E) spends entirely on one target.

Garen + Morgana Strong

Courage (W) cuts damage but never removes crowd control already on you, and that's how you die when they dive you: Black Shield (E) blocks it before it lands. Dark Binding (Q) then holds whoever you were chasing for two seconds.

Garen + Braum Situational

He's for the poke compositions that whittle you down from range, your stated weakness: Unbreakable (E) intercepts projectiles and cuts 35% of incoming damage while you walk them down. Against divers he changes much less.

How to play Garen — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Garen, Wild Rift's Might of Demacia, is a beginner-friendly Fighter built around simple, forgiving mechanics and high durability rather than combos or mechanical skill. He deals mostly physical damage through auto-attacks and his spinning Judgment, backed by a passive that heals back a chunk of missing health whenever he avoids damage for a few seconds, and closes out fights with a true-damage execute that bypasses armor and magic resistance entirely. He's less a teamfight enabler than a self-sufficient duelist and split-pusher who wants to isolate a single target and end the fight before it turns into a full 5v5.

Strengths

  • Extremely easy to pick up — a simple, forgiving kit that rewards good target selection over mechanical skill, making him one of the best champions for new Wild Rift players.
  • Dominant 1v1 duelist and lane bully: Q's silence cuts off their abilities for 1.5 seconds at the key moment (summoner spells like Flash and Heal still work), and E's spin adds up fast while shredding armor the longer it lands.
  • Demacian Justice deals true damage that ignores armor and magic resistance, letting him execute a low-health target no matter how much they've stacked defensively.
  • High innate survivability — solid base stats, Courage's damage reduction and shield, and passive sustain between fights make him hard to finish off in skirmishes or while split-pushing.

Weaknesses

  • No real gap closer beyond Q's short speed burst, so ranged kiters, blinks and hard crowd control can keep him from ever reaching his target.
  • Brings almost no CC or utility for teammates — once his own target is dead or out of reach, he has little left to offer a fight.
  • Struggles hard against sustained poke and disengage compositions that whittle him down before he can ever commit to a trade.
  • Courage reduces incoming damage and grants tenacity but doesn't remove crowd control already on him, so a burst combo that lands before it's up can still delete him.

Combos

  • Q → Auto-Attack → E → R — pop Q for the speed burst and silence-empowered attack on your target, spin up E while they're locked down, then finish with R once they're low; Garen's standard all-in from neutral.
  • Flash/Ghost → Q → E — Garen has no hard gap closer, so use a summoner spell to close the initial distance, then chain Q's silence into E's spin so the target is locked down the instant you arrive.
  • Early recast on E — cancel the spin manually the moment your target dies, flashes away, or leaves range instead of letting all hits play out; you recover part of the cooldown and can threaten again sooner.
  • W before you commit — pop Courage's damage reduction, shield and tenacity a moment before diving or before you expect to be dove, rather than reacting after the burst has already landed.

Skill order: E > Q > W

Early game

Garen wants to shove the wave with E's spin and punish any overextension by popping Q for the silence-empowered auto — the silence alone can deny an escape or healing ability, turning a normal trade into a kill. Look for all-in windows whenever the enemy laner misses CS or steps up too far, then disengage and let Perseverance tick between trades; stepping out of combat for even a few seconds opens a big sustain window most opponents can't match early. Every extra rank in E also builds toward the armor shred on repeated hits, so route the spin through the enemy champion rather than only the minions whenever a trade is safe.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

By mid-to-late game Garen plays less like a frontline tank and more like a flanking duelist: use Q to shed slows and close on an isolated backline target, silence them on arrival to cut off their escape or heal, then spin E to shred armor and threaten anyone who piles in nearby. Save R for whoever is lowest on the true-damage curve — a fed marksman or mage at 30-40% health dies to Demacian Justice regardless of stacked armor or magic resistance, so treat it as a snipe rather than something you hold until point-blank. He has no hard engage of his own, so time his commitment to when teammates have already forced the fight or peeled the initial threat, and lean on Courage's damage reduction and tenacity to survive the return burst rather than expecting it to save him from a full CC chain.

Pro tips

  • Hold Q's silence for the moment it matters most — an ability they need to escape or heal with — instead of firing it off as a free damage proc. Remember it only blocks abilities: Flash, Heal and Cleanse still go off.
  • Manually recast E the instant your target dies or leaves range; letting all 8-11 hits play out instead of cancelling early wastes cooldown you'll want for the next skirmish.
  • Track your own passive — stepping back for a couple of seconds mid-siege or during a split-push resets Perseverance's regen, so disengage behind a minion wave rather than trading down to zero.
