Who counters Kennen — hardest matchups & how to play them

The toughest lane matchups for Kennen on the Wild Rift China server, with why each is hard and exactly how to play it.

MalphiteKennen vs Malphite Unfavorable

Why Malphite counters Kennen: Armor against your attacks and an R that pre-empts yours: your lightning flash fizzles on the rock.

How to play Kennen into Malphite: Go full AP and poke with abilities only. Your R is worth double when you enter AFTER his: play counter-engage.

→ Malphite
RenektonKennen vs Renekton Unfavorable

Why Renekton counters Kennen: His guaranteed-stun trades beat your close-range poke, and your fragility forgives one mistake for every three of his.

How to play Kennen into Renekton: Poke ONLY with Q from full range. Go for the third mark only when his W is spent. After 5 your R all-in catches him off guard.

→ Renekton
IreliaKennen vs Irelia Unfavorable

Why Irelia counters Kennen: With minion resets she closes onto you and her stun interrupts your R: she chases better than you flee.

How to play Kennen into Irelia: No low-health minions near you: without resets she has no entry. Stun her first: whoever lands CC first wins.

→ Irelia
JaxKennen vs Jax Skill matchup

Why Jax counters Kennen: Counter Strike cancels your attacks but not your abilities: the matchup becomes about who manages cooldowns better.

How to play Kennen into Jax: During his E use abilities only and walk out. Stack marks with Q and W when he jumps onto minions. You scale better in 5v5s: make them happen.

→ Jax
GnarKennen vs Gnar Skill matchup

Why Gnar counters Kennen: A range question: as Mini you poke evenly, as Mega his all-in beats yours if he starts first.

How to play Kennen into Gnar: Watch his rage: poke hard when he is near Mega, because he does not want to engage and drop back to an empty Mini. Keep a defensive R for his Mega jump.

→ Gnar

Who to play with Kennen — best team synergies

The champions Kennen works best alongside on the Wild Rift China server, lane by lane, with the reason each pairing works.

Best Baron partners for Kennen

Kennen + Malphite Best pairing

Unstoppable Force (R) floors the whole group in one spot, which is the one thing Slicing Maelstrom (R) is missing: a motionless pile inside the storm collects Mark of the Storm (P) stacks back to back and stuns itself.

Kennen + Ornn Strong

His page says he punishes nobody on his own, and your problem is keeping them inside Slicing Maelstrom (R): Searing Charge (E) into a wall and the Call of the Forge God (R) ram redirected into their line pin them there while the storm pulses.

Kennen + Shen Strong

Your page is blunt: outside Slicing Maelstrom (R) you have no defensive tool at all. Shadow Dash (E) taunts the diver before he reaches you, and Stand United (R) shields you from half a map away the moment you flank in with Lightning Rush (E).

Kennen + Singed Strong

Mega Adhesive (W) under a stunned group means nobody strolls out of the storm, and anyone Fling (E) throws into the glue is rooted outright. It is also how a diver gets peeled off you while Lightning Rush (E) is on cooldown.

Kennen + Gnar Situational

It depends on terrain. GNAR! (R) into a wall stuns the group and leaves it stacked inside Slicing Maelstrom (R), with Wallop (W) on top; in open ground it shoves them away exactly while the storm is pulsing.

Best Jungle partners for Kennen

Kennen + Amumu Best pairing

Curse of the Sad Mummy (R) pins them all for 1.5 seconds, which hands Slicing Maelstrom (R) a full window of targets that cannot move. And Cursed Touch (P) makes every magic hit carry true damage, which means all of yours.

Kennen + Jarvan IV Strong

Your page says to stay on one target, because Slicing Maelstrom (R) gains 10% damage on every repeated hit against the same enemy: Cataclysm (R) is the wall that stops that enemy from leaving while the storm keeps hammering.

Kennen + Diana Strong

Her page says Moonfall (R) only works up close and that mobile targets walk out of the zone before it detonates: a Mark of the Storm (P) stun keeps them in it, and the slow that follows leaves them sitting in your storm.

Kennen + Nunu & Willump Strong

His page says Absolute Zero (R) is beaten by simply walking away: after a Mark of the Storm (P) stun nobody is walking anywhere. And Biggest Snowball Ever! (W) is the second engage that bunches them up while your ultimate is down.

Kennen + Rammus Situational

He is for games where a single enemy carry decides everything: Frenzying Taunt (E) holds it still inside the storm, and his page says the team's damage has to do the rest. He adds nothing to bunching up the other four.

Best Duo (ADC) partners for Kennen

Kennen + Miss Fortune Best pairing

Bullet Time (R) is a three-second channel that her page says gets danced around: Mark of the Storm (P) takes movement away from the entire group. Two area ultimates on the same pile, and yours is the one holding it still.

Kennen + Jhin Strong

Lightning Rush (E) cuts through the group and tags all of them: anyone you have just touched turns Deadly Flourish (W) into a real root instead of a poke shot. Curtain Call (R) then executes whoever your marks have already stunned.

Kennen + Ashe Strong

Enchanted Crystal Arrow (R) opens the fight from off-screen, so you are not the one who has to go in first with Lightning Rush (E). And Frost Shot (P) slows on every single hit: Thundering Shuriken (Q) does not miss a slowed target.

Kennen + Varus Strong

Chain of Corruption (R) roots the first target and spreads to whoever stands next to them: your storm forces them to stay close, his chain ties them down. And Blighted Quiver (W) piles magic damage onto the pile you are already burning.

Kennen + Yunara Situational

Arc of Judgment (W) leaves a near-total slow that stacks with the storm, and nobody gets out of that spot. But her page says she folds to any dive and you peel for nobody, so this needs a real frontline in front of you both.

Best Support partners for Kennen

Kennen + Rakan Best pairing

Grand Entrance (W) knocks up and The Quickness (R) charms the same targets: his page counts nearly two seconds of chained crowd control, which is the window Slicing Maelstrom (R) pulses in. Battle Dance (E) then reaches you and shields you inside them.

Kennen + Sona Best pairing

Crescendo (R) stuns the first target it touches and slows everyone else caught in the wave, so the storm pulses on a group that cannot reposition. Aria of Perseverance (W) keeps you standing, the one thing you lack in the middle of them.

Kennen + Rell Strong

Magnet Storm (R) vacuums scattered enemies into a single pile, which is the condition your ultimate needs. Her page says the damage has to come from someone else: Slicing Maelstrom (R) on five stacked targets is that damage.

Kennen + Karma Strong

Transcendent Embrace (R) hits the whole group and knocks them toward the centre, packing them together instead of scattering them. A Mantra (P) empowered Inspire (E) is shield plus speed on the exact beat you flank in with Lightning Rush (E).

Kennen + Thresh Strong

The Box (R) shuts the exits with a 99% slow, so anyone trying to leave the storm stays in it. And the Dark Passage (W) lantern is the way back out when you flank in and Lightning Rush (E) is already spent getting there.

How to play Kennen — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Kennen is a ranged burst mage in Wild Rift built around Mark of the Storm: every ability he lands stacks a mark on the target, and three stacks lock them down with a stun. His damage is entirely magical and surprisingly heavy for how mobile he is, mixing safe poke from Thundering Shuriken with an all-in built on Electrical Surge and Lightning Rush. He's less a lane bully than a set-up-and-detonate skirmisher: stack marks from range, then convert the stun into a kill once Slicing Maelstrom is online.

Strengths

  • Mark of the Storm gives him a genuine, repeatable stun rather than a one-off cooldown — three stacks (each lasting 6 seconds) lock a target down for 1.25 seconds and refund 25 energy on top.
  • Heavy burst for a mobile kit: Thundering Shuriken alone hits for 75 magic damage, Electrical Surge's active adds 70 more to everyone marked nearby, and its passive tacks on an extra 55 magic damage every 5th auto attack.
  • Lightning Rush is engage, poke, and escape in one button — 2 seconds of movement through the enemy team (100% bonus speed, doubled for the first half-second) that also deals 70 magic damage to anything it passes through and refunds 40 energy on its first hit.
  • Slicing Maelstrom is a rare mage ultimate that also protects him: 20 armor and 20 magic resist for its duration, while its repeated pulses (every 0.5 seconds for 3 seconds) both chip away at everyone nearby and keep reapplying marks.

Weaknesses

  • Outside of an active Slicing Maelstrom he has no defensive tools at all, so any burst or extended all-in he can't kite away from ends badly.
  • Renekton and Irelia both punish him for standing still — Renekton's guaranteed stun wins the trade before Kennen's marks matter, and Irelia's own stun cuts off Lightning Rush as an escape once she closes the gap.
  • Malphite counters the whole game plan: armor blunts the auto-attack half of his damage, and his own hard-engage ultimate can interrupt Kennen's setup before Slicing Maelstrom ever comes online.
  • Energy-reliant early: Lightning Rush and the Electrical Surge active both cost meaningful energy, so before level 5 he often has to choose between poking and keeping an escape in reserve.

Combos

  • Q (Thundering Shuriken) → AA → W (Electrical Surge, active) — land the shuriken for the first mark, weave in autos (every 5th hit adds 55 bonus magic damage and a second mark), then pop W to zap all nearby marked targets for 70 more and trip the stun on the third stack.
  • E (Lightning Rush) → Q → W (active) → R — dash through the group for 70 magic damage and a batch of marks, land Thundering Shuriken on the priority target, detonate the stun with Electrical Surge, then chain straight into Slicing Maelstrom so its half-second pulses keep re-marking and chipping down everyone caught in the storm.
  • R (Slicing Maelstrom) → AA/Q — in a messy skirmish, the ultimate's own pulses (one every 0.5 seconds) can stack three marks on a nearby enemy almost by itself, so a single follow-up auto or Thundering Shuriken is often all it takes to trip the stun on top of the ongoing damage.
  • Q → AA x2 → disengage — the safe laning trade: one Thundering Shuriken plus a couple of autos gets two stacks rolling without ever entering true melee range, so back off rather than force the third stack against a threatening opponent.

Skill order: Q > W > E — max Thundering Shuriken first for trade damage, Electrical Surge second to scale the AoE burst and mark uptime, and take Slicing Maelstrom (R) at every level it's available.

Early game

Poke with Thundering Shuriken whenever it's up — 75 magic damage from range is a strong trade on its own, and it starts the 6-second mark timer before you ever have to get close. Weave in autos during trades since Electrical Surge's passive adds a free 55 magic damage and another mark every 5th hit, but stop at two stacks rather than force the stun if the opponent can punish you for closing in. Manage energy carefully before level 5: Lightning Rush costs a real chunk of your bar, so don't burn it just to poke when you might need the movement speed to escape a gank. Level 5 is Kennen's first true power spike — Slicing Maelstrom's rapid pulses can finish a stun almost by itself, turning a good trade into a kill.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

From the mid game on, flank instead of walking in from the front: Lightning Rush lets you cut through the side of a group, tagging several enemies with marks and dealing 70 magic damage along the way while refunding energy. Pick one priority target, usually the enemy carry, and stay on them — Slicing Maelstrom's damage climbs 10% with every repeated hit on the same enemy, so bouncing between targets wastes that scaling. Trigger the ultimate a beat before the dive comes, not after, since its 20 armor and 20 magic resist only help while it's actually active, and let its pulses plus Electrical Surge's active finish the stun chain on anyone already marked. Kennen has no other defensive cooldown, so always know which direction Lightning Rush takes him if the fight turns.

Pro tips

  • Weave an auto attack between spells whenever you can — Electrical Surge's passive triggers off the 5th hit regardless of what else you're casting, so free-rolling autos during a trade is pure upside.
  • Save Lightning Rush as a panic button as often as you use it to engage: the speed bonus is doubled for the first half-second, which is usually enough to pull you clean out of a dive if you commit to leaving early.
  • Duelists like Jax and Gnar flip the matchup on their own timers — Jax's Counter Strike blocks your autos but not your spells, so bait it before committing your combo, and Gnar's danger spikes hard the moment he transforms into Mega Gnar, so play the laning phase around denying that window rather than contesting it evenly.
