Who counters Riven — hardest matchups & how to play them

The toughest lane matchups for Riven on the Wild Rift China server, with why each is hard and exactly how to play it.

RenektonRiven vs Renekton Unfavorable

Why Renekton counters Riven: A point-and-click stun inside your animations and sustain that repairs your best trades: your hardest apprenticeship.

How to play Riven into Renekton: Trade with the three Qs ONLY when his fury is empty. The shield must be spent EXACTLY on his W. Always keep one Q to leave.

→ Renekton
VayneRiven vs Vayne Unfavorable

Why Vayne counters Riven: Range and Tumble against your cooldown-based fuel: when your Qs run out, she begins.

How to play Riven into Vayne: Full all-in or zero contact: half-trades feed her. Stun on her Tumble cooldown and fight near walls so her Condemn has nowhere good to land.

→ Vayne
MalphiteRiven vs Malphite Unfavorable

Why Malphite counters Riven: Armor against a fully physical kit: your elegant combos become knocks on an armored door.

How to play Riven into Malphite: Accept the draw: farm with Q resets and play the rest of the map. In fights skip the front line: you are built for carries.

→ Malphite
FioraRiven vs Fiora Skill matchup

Why Fiora counters Riven: The finest duel in the lane: Riposte against stun, Vitals against animation cancels. Whoever errs last wins.

How to play Riven into Fiora: Stun at the END of the combo, not the start: it slips outside her Riposte reaction. Third Q on the Vitals to deny them with the knock-up.

→ Fiora
GarenRiven vs Garen Skill matchup

Why Garen counters Riven: His silence cuts your dances short, but your mobility wins every trade you start.

How to play Riven into Garen: In and out BEFORE the third tick of his E. Never fight inside his wave: silence plus spin are worth double there.

→ Garen

Who to play with Riven — best team synergies

The champions Riven works best alongside on the Wild Rift China server, lane by lane, with the reason each pairing works.

Best Baron partners for Riven

Riven + Malphite Best pairing

Your page says one armour item turns your combo into glancing blows: Malphite's damage is magic, so a single purchase cannot answer both of you. And Unstoppable Force (R) knocks up half their team: that is the clean window in which nothing interrupts the Broken Wings (Q) chain.

Riven + Shen Best pairing

You have no mana, only cooldowns: with Broken Wings (Q) and Valor (E) down you have nothing left to get out with. Stand United (R) shields you and teleports him onto you from anywhere on the map, and Shadow Dash (E) taunts whoever is finishing you.

Riven + Ornn Strong

Bellows Breath (W) makes the target Brittle and stretches the crowd control that follows by 30%: the 0.75-second Ki Burst (W) stun becomes nearly a full second, which is your entire Broken Wings (Q) chain. And Living Forge (P) restocks you without a trip home.

Riven + K'Sante Strong

All Out (R) knocks a carry away from her team and roots her: an isolated, motionless body with nobody left to peel is exactly what your combo deletes. And if you get stuck inside, Footwork (E) reaches you and hands you his shield.

Riven + Volibear Situational

Worth it if you plan to dive early: Stormbringer (R) shuts the turret off for three seconds and the Thundering Smash (Q) stun holds the target for your whole Broken Wings (Q) chain. The longer the game runs, though, the less a tower dive is worth.

Best Mid partners for Riven

Riven + Yasuo Best pairing

The third hit of Broken Wings (Q) knocks up, and that is exactly the invitation Last Breath (R) waits for: you are one of the few junglers who can hand him one on demand. And Wind Wall (W) stops the ranged crowd control that breaks your dash chain.

Riven + Galio Strong

If the target survives your burst you are stranded with everything on cooldown: Hero's Entrance (R) lands right on top of you, with a shield and a knock-up on everyone who closed in. And his damage is magic, so armour cannot switch off both of you.

Riven + Nasus Strong

Every point of your damage is physical and one armour item blunts all of it: Spirit Fire (E) shreds that armour. And Wither (W) strips the target's movement, so it stays inside all three Broken Wings (Q) dashes right to the last hit.

Riven + Lissandra Strong

Ring of Frost (W) roots and Frozen Tomb (R) freezes the same target: nearly three seconds in which it can neither dash away nor answer, far more than the window you need between Ki Burst (W) and three Broken Wings (Q) dashes.

Riven + Twisted Fate Strong

Destiny (R) reveals the whole map before you move, so you pick whoever is alone instead of guessing, then it teleports him into your dive. And the Gold Card from Pick a Card (W) stuns, so Broken Wings (Q) opens on a body that cannot react.

Best Duo (ADC) partners for Riven

Riven + Ashe Best pairing

Your combo needs two seconds of unbroken contact: Frost Shot (P) slows with every hit, so the target never leaves the Broken Wings (Q) chain. And Enchanted Crystal Arrow (R) stuns it from off-screen, so you can switch on Blade of the Exile (R) before you commit.

Riven + Ezreal Strong

You bring no peel at all, and Ezreal is the marksman who asks for none: Arcane Shift (E) does it for himself. And Trueshot Barrage (R) finishes, from outside the fight, whoever survived your burst on a sliver of health.

Riven + Jhin Strong

Deadly Flourish (W) roots anyone an ally has just hit: one Ki Burst (W) is enough and the target stays pinned while Broken Wings (Q) comes back up. Then Curtain Call (R) closes out, from range, whoever ran away on low health.

Riven + Kalista Strong

Bonded to her as her Oathsworn, Fate's Call (R) rips you out when the burst did not kill and Valor (E) is on cooldown: the plan B your kit does not contain. Or it launches you in, knocking up everyone you hit.

Riven + Draven Situational

Worth it in games you mean to close early: with no mana you can drop into a lane whenever Broken Wings (Q) is back, and every kill banks his League of Draven (P) Adoration stacks. If the game drags on, you needed to be ahead already.

Best Support partners for Riven

Riven + Morgana Best pairing

Your page says point-and-click crowd control interrupts your dashes and kills the combo before it starts: Black Shield (E) absorbs that crowd control outright. And Dark Binding (Q) roots for two seconds, far more than you need.

Riven + Thresh Best pairing

Death Sentence (Q) and Flay (E) hand you a body that cannot move, but the real gift is the lantern: with Valor (E) on cooldown, Dark Passage (W) is your only way out of a dive that did not kill.

Riven + Sona Strong

Crescendo (R) stuns the first target it touches and slows everyone else inside: that is the window in which nothing interrupts your Broken Wings (Q) chain. And the Hymn of Valor (Q) aura adds damage to the Runic Blade (P) autos you weave between dashes.

Riven + Rakan Strong

Grand Entrance (W) knocks up and The Quickness (R) charms the same targets: nearly two seconds of chained crowd control, the length of your whole combo. And Battle Dance (E) brings him onto you with a shield when the dive goes wrong.

Riven + Leona Strong

The Zenith Blade (E) root chained into the Shield of Daybreak (Q) stun and your own Ki Burst (W) holds a carry still for your entire combo. And hits on a Sunlight (P) marked target add magic damage to your all-physical burst.

Riven + Nautilus Situational

Depth Charge (R) is a point-and-click knock-up that cannot be dodged or blocked: it hands you the carry you picked, motionless, along with whoever stands beside her. He is still a 48%-winrate support in China, with a slow start.

How to play Riven — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Riven, Wild Rift's Exile, is a high-skill-ceiling melee Fighter who lives in the Baron lane, chaining the three dashes of Broken Wings into charged auto attacks for some of the most explosive single-target burst in the game. Every point of her damage is physical and gated by cooldowns rather than mana, so her power comes almost entirely from combo execution and dash timing instead of itemized resources. She trades team utility and raw durability for that burst, making her a snowball champion who wants to win her lane outright and then hunt down priority targets rather than grind through prolonged fights.

Strengths

  • Explosive all-in combo — chaining all three Broken Wings dashes with weaved auto attacks and Ki Burst's 0.75-second stun can delete a squishy target in under two seconds.
  • Blade of the Exile snowballs on its own: every takedown during its 12-second window resets Wind Slash and extends the ultimate, so a fed Riven can chain kills across a single fight without ever recalling.
  • Exceptional self-mobility from Q's dashes and Valor's gap-close makes her brutally hard to kite, disengage from, or wall off — her third Broken Wings hit alone can cross terrain.
  • Strong dueling power: Ki Burst locks an opponent down mid-trade while Valor's 85-point shield eats the return damage, so she wins most extended 1v1s she chooses to start.

Weaknesses

  • Every cooldown is precious — with no mana bar, Broken Wings and Valor are her entire resource pool, and once they're down she has almost no poke, escape, or defense left.
  • Hard, point-and-click crowd control that interrupts her dash animations shuts down her whole combo before it starts — she can't fight through a stun the way tankier bruisers can.
  • 100% of her kit's damage is physical, so a single early armor item or a matchup like Malphite turns her elegant combos into glancing blows.
  • Her ultimate isn't a lockdown tool — Blade of the Exile only buffs her own damage and range, so if the target survives the opening burst she's left committed on cooldown with nothing left to force the kill.

Combos

  • Q → AA → Q → AA → Q → AA — weave a basic attack after every Broken Wings dash; each ability cast charges Runic Blade, so the auto that follows always lands for an extra 15 physical damage. This is Riven's bread-and-butter trade from level 1 onward.
  • W → Q → AA → E — open with Ki Burst to stun the target in place, dash through the full Broken Wings chain with a weaved auto for guaranteed damage, then spend Valor either to finish the kill or to shield out safely.
  • R → Q → W → AA → Wind Slash — after level 5, activate Blade of the Exile before you commit so the +25% attack damage and extended range are live for the whole engage, lock the target with Ki Burst, then close with Wind Slash — it scales from 100 up to 300 physical damage the lower the target's remaining health, making it a clean execute.

Skill order: Q > W > E — max Broken Wings first for the lowest dash cooldown and the most raw damage, rank Ki Burst second to shrink the stun's cooldown for more reliable combo locks, and leave Valor last since keeping Q and W available matters more than a bigger shield.

Early game

Riven has no mana, so treat Broken Wings' cooldown as her real resource bar: trade only when Q is up, land a dash into a weaved auto for the Runic Blade bonus, and back off before the recovery window lets the enemy punish you. Use minion aggro and terrain to set up a clean all-in the moment you can land two Q hits plus Ki Burst's stun before the opponent reacts — that combo alone threatens a kill as early as level 3-4. Hold Valor's shield for the enemy's actual damage window instead of burning it just to close distance, and play cautiously into lane opponents with hard, point-and-click crowd control that can interrupt your dash chain mid-combo.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

Blade of the Exile is Riven's real power spike from level 5 on — activate it before you commit so the attack damage buff and extended auto-attack range are already live when you dive, and aim that dive at the backline carry rather than the frontline tank. Use Ki Burst to lock down the priority target and save the Q3 knock-up either to peel a diver off your own team or to reposition mid-fight. Because every takedown resets Wind Slash and extends the ultimate's timer, a fed Riven should keep chasing the next low-health target instead of walking away after the first kill. She has no ranged poke and no disengage beyond Valor, so look for picks and side-lane skirmishes rather than walking into a full five-man front line.

Pro tips

  • Never waste a Runic Blade charge — cash in an auto attack after each Q dash instead of firing all three Broken Wings hits back-to-back with no weaved damage in between.
  • Time Valor's 85-point shield to absorb the enemy's hardest hit of the trade, not just to gap-close; blocking the right burst can flip an even fight in your favor.
  • In a skirmish, chase the reset — a takedown instantly refreshes Wind Slash, so dash onto the next low-health target instead of walking back to base after your first elimination.
