Who counters Jarvan IV — hardest matchups & how to play them

The toughest lane matchups for Jarvan IV on the Wild Rift China server, with why each is hard and exactly how to play it.

VayneJarvan IV vs Vayne Unfavorable

Why Vayne counters Jarvan IV: Tumble hops over your flag-and-drag combo and Condemn pins you inside your own arena.

How to play Jarvan IV into Vayne: Cage her ONLY with your team ready to follow: the arena alone is a trap for you. Use the E-Q combo while her Tumble is on cooldown.

→ Vayne
RammusJarvan IV vs Rammus Skill matchup

Why Rammus counters Jarvan IV: His armor holds your physical kit, but your flag combo still connects and your R does not ask his permission.

How to play Jarvan IV into Rammus: Do not duel him: use your mobility to out-gank him. Save the arena for carries: let him roll around in the void.

→ Rammus
Lee SinJarvan IV vs Lee Sin Skill matchup

Why Lee Sin counters Jarvan IV: Two early-game gankers: his kicks against your flag. Whoever reaches lanes first writes the story.

How to play Jarvan IV into Lee Sin: Gank the lanes OPPOSITE his routes. In 2v2s open with the E-Q knock-up: force him to respond, not to initiate.

→ Lee Sin
KindredJarvan IV vs Kindred Skill matchup

Why Kindred counters Jarvan IV: Her R inside your R: the death arena becomes a waiting room where nobody dies.

How to play Jarvan IV into Kindred: Close the arena AFTER her zone, never at the same time. Invade her marked camps: your early aggression costs her scaling.

→ Kindred
WarwickJarvan IV vs Warwick Skill matchup

Why Warwick counters Jarvan IV: His sustain wins duels and his fear punishes your flag engage: he waits for you at the gap you planted yourself.

How to play Jarvan IV into Warwick: Do not duel in his corridors. Engage with E-Q and drop your R on his carry: the dog chases, but you decide where the fight happens.

→ Warwick

Who to play with Jarvan IV — best team synergies

The champions Jarvan IV works best alongside on the Wild Rift China server, lane by lane, with the reason each pairing works.

Best Baron partners for Jarvan IV

Jarvan IV + Aatrox Best pairing

You have no sustain and only middling damage: he brings both. Once the wall is up nobody walks away, so the tip of The Darkin Blade (Q) always lands, and Deathbringer Stance (P) heals back what a long trade would cost you.

Jarvan IV + Shen Best pairing

Your page warns that on the wrong target you end up sealed alone inside your own arena: Stand United (R) teleports him in there with you, shield attached. And Shadow Dash (E) taunts, so Dragon Strike (Q) doesn't miss.

Jarvan IV + Darius Strong

Your own damage often isn't enough to close the pick: Noxian Guillotine (R) is, and it doesn't have to reach anyone because the target is already sealed in. Before that, Apprehend (E) drags back whoever was sliding away.

Jarvan IV + Yone Strong

Your own tip is to trap two enemies, not one: Fate Sealed (R) is what punishes both, because inside the ring they don't have a metre of room to step off the line. And inside the wall you're no longer the only one soaking damage.

Jarvan IV + Camille Situational

The Hextech Ultimatum (R) isolates a target the same way you do, so spent together one of them is thrown away: play them back to back, your ring first and hers when it drops. For those six seconds a carry never touches her own team.

Best Mid partners for Jarvan IV

Jarvan IV + Yasuo Best pairing

Your knock-up through the Demacian Standard (E) flag is the most repeatable Last Breath (R) window in the game, and it comes back every skirmish. On top of that Wind Wall (W) eats the ranged poke your page says shuts your engage down.

Jarvan IV + Kennen Best pairing

Slicing Maelstrom (R) pulses for three seconds and only pays on whoever stays inside: your ring takes away the one answer your prisoners have, walking out. And Lightning Rush (E) carries him into the wall without spending a dash to get close.

Jarvan IV + Swain Strong

He supplies the damage you lack to finish the pick: Demonic Ascension (R) drains the bodies you just sealed in without pause, and the more are in there the longer he holds. Nevermove (E) roots first, so Dragon Strike (Q) stops being a skillshot.

Jarvan IV + Brand Strong

Your own page says to seal the support in as well, not just the carry: with two bodies a few metres apart Pyroclasm (R) bounces back and forth between the same two. And Sear (Q) on anyone already carrying Blaze (P) is a 1.75-second stun.

Jarvan IV + Galio Situational

Hero's Entrance (R) reaches you from half a map away and takes the counter-engage off your back, but the channel is long and your wall lasts seconds: either he starts the instant you leap, or he arrives after the ring has already dropped.

Best Duo (ADC) partners for Jarvan IV

Jarvan IV + Vayne Best pairing

Condemn (E) only stuns when it slams the target into terrain, and out in the open there is none: you build it around them with Cataclysm (R), wherever you like. Inside the ring she also gets the time to trigger Silver Bolts (W).

Jarvan IV + Samira Best pairing

Inferno Trigger (R) forces her to stand among them for ten shots, and your wall is the one place where nobody can reach in and pull her off. With the targets that close, Flair (Q) mid-channel pierces every one of them in a single line.

Jarvan IV + Miss Fortune Strong

She needs targets that don't move, and that is precisely what you build: inside the ring Bullet Time (R) empties the whole cone onto whoever you sealed. Make It Rain (E) meanwhile slows the group while you pick who to leap on.

Jarvan IV + Jhin Strong

One clip from Dragon Strike (Q) is enough to switch on Deadly Flourish (W), which turns into a real root: the target stops moving and you get to choose calmly where Cataclysm (R) comes down. Then Curtain Call (R) fires into the ring.

Jarvan IV + Varus Situational

Chain of Corruption (R) only spreads between enemies standing close together, and you usually seal in one or two: when it's two you get a free double lockdown, when it's one you spent his ultimate on a root you already had.

Best Support partners for Jarvan IV

Jarvan IV + Leona Best pairing

Everything you own before the ultimate is a skillshot or very short range: with Zenith Blade (E) into Shield of Daybreak (Q) the target is frozen and the flag-and-lance combo stops missing. Solar Flare (R) then drops inside the ring.

Jarvan IV + Braum Strong

Your page says superior range and slows shut your engage down before Cataclysm (R) is even available: Unbreakable (E) eats those projectiles while you walk in. And if you leap on the wrong target, Glacial Fissure (R) is the second engage.

Jarvan IV + Thresh Strong

The Box (R) keeps out the four you left on the far side of the wall while the two of you work on the one inside. And if you picked the wrong target, Dark Passage (W) is the only way out of your own arena before the ring drops.

Jarvan IV + Sona Strong

There isn't a gram of lifesteal anywhere in your kit: Aria of Perseverance (W) is what lets you survive the long trades your page says you lose. And Crescendo (R) stuns as one group the enemies your wall just squeezed into a few metres.

Jarvan IV + Blitzcrank Situational

When Rocket Grab (Q) lands the pick is already done and you keep Cataclysm (R) for the next fight; when it misses, neither of you has another way to open. He doubles your good games and covers none of your bad ones.

How to play Jarvan IV — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Jarvan IV, Wild Rift's Prince of Demacia, is a jungle-first Fighter built around picking exactly when and where a fight happens rather than out-damaging the enemy in a straight line. His damage is almost entirely physical, layering auto-attack procs from Martial Cadence on top of Dragon Strike's spear, and his signature tool is Cataclysm — a leap that walls a single enemy off from their team for several seconds. He's an easy champion to learn, with damage, durability and team support all sitting at a comfortable middle ground, so his real skill ceiling is in reading and timing the engage rather than chasing bigger numbers.

Strengths

  • Cataclysm is a self-sufficient pick tool — leap onto an isolated target, wall them away from their team, and either finish them alone or hold them until allies arrive.
  • Martial Cadence deals bonus damage equal to a percentage of the target's current health, so his autos punish tanks and other high-HP targets far harder than his flat numbers suggest.
  • Dragon Strike combined with the Demacian Standard flag gives him extra dash range and a knock-up, letting him initiate fights from further out than most junglers' basic gap-closers allow.
  • Golden Aegis doubles as a shield and an AoE slow, letting him survive a counter-engage and still lock down whoever tries to run.

Weaknesses

  • Every tool before the ultimate is either short-range or a skillshot — whiff Dragon Strike or misplace the flag and he has no way left to close the distance.
  • Cataclysm only wins the fight if the right target gets walled in; jump onto the wrong hero and he's the one stuck alone inside his own arena.
  • No built-in sustain or lifesteal, so extended trades against healing-heavy Fighters or aggressive lane bullies go badly without itemization to cover it.
  • Champions with slows, hard crowd control or superior range can shut down his whole engage before Cataclysm ever comes online.

Combos

  • Demacian Standard (E) → Dragon Strike (Q) → Cataclysm (R) — drop the flag past the target, throw Q through it so the dash drags you in with a knock-up, then seal the engage with R before they can react.
  • Dragon Strike (Q) → Auto-Attack → Demacian Standard (E) → Auto-Attack — the core trade: Q's damage and armor shred, an auto to trigger Martial Cadence's percent-health bonus, then E's flag for the attack-speed buff to keep autos landing.
  • Cataclysm (R) → Dragon Strike (Q, through the flag) → Auto-Attack — on an isolated target, open with R to wall off outside help, use the flag-and-spear dash to stay stuck to them inside the ring, and keep landing autos until the wall drops.
  • Flank engage: Cataclysm (R) → Dragon Strike (Q) — jump onto an exposed backline target from an unexpected angle, then chain Q through the dropped flag, if it's down, to keep sticking to them as they try to run inside the wall.

Skill order: Q > E > W

Early game

Early on, Jarvan leans on Dragon Strike's damage and armor shred to speed through jungle camps, while Demacian Standard's passive attack speed keeps his auto-resets flowing between clears. Look for ganks in lanes with reliable crowd control to follow up — the flag-and-spear combo gives extra dash range most junglers don't have this early, letting him engage from outside a normal gap-closer's range. Hold Golden Aegis until the enemy actually commits to the fight so the shield and slow land when they matter, and save Cataclysm for a target your team can actually punish once the wall goes up rather than the first hero in sight.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

From the mid game on, the job shifts from tanking hits to picking fights: scan for the enemy's carry or key crowd-control caster standing slightly apart from their group, then jump Cataclysm straight onto them so the wall physically removes their teammates from the fight for a few seconds. Chain the flag and Dragon Strike to stay stuck to whoever tries to escape inside the ring, and hold Golden Aegis for the moment the enemy turns back onto you rather than burning it on cooldown. Committing the ultimate to the wrong hero — a frontline tank instead of an exposed backline carry — is the single biggest reason a Jarvan engage falls apart, so patience before the jump matters more than how fast he takes it.

Pro tips

  • Pre-place the flag (E) slightly behind or beside the intended dash path before a fight actually starts — it turns Dragon Strike into a surprise gap-closer instead of a telegraphed skillshot the enemy sees coming.
  • Before jumping Cataclysm, check who else is standing close enough to get walled in alongside the main target — trapping a healer or key support with the carry is often a better outcome than isolating the carry alone.
  • Recast Cataclysm to collapse the wall the moment the kill is secured, rather than letting it run its full duration and giving the enemy team time to regroup around it instead of inside it.
