Who counters Smolder — hardest matchups & how to play them

The toughest lane matchups for Smolder on the Wild Rift China server, with why each is hard and exactly how to play it.

DravenSmolder vs Draven Hard counter

Why Draven counters Smolder: You have to count to 225 stacks and he counts to 3 axes: his damage does not wait for your growth.

How to play Smolder into Draven: Stack ONLY on safe minions, zero trades. Your E flies over walls: use it as an emergency exit, never for damage.

→ Draven
LucianSmolder vs Lucian Unfavorable

Why Lucian counters Smolder: Dash-powered burst at your weak levels: every short trade delays the stacks that are your entire identity.

How to play Smolder into Lucian: Q the minions, not him, until you pass 100 stacks. Defensive support and patience: the adult dragon repays everything.

→ Lucian
CaitlynSmolder vs Caitlyn Unfavorable

Why Caitlyn counters Smolder: Her range taxes your every stack: the count proceeds in monthly installments under her poke.

How to play Smolder into Caitlyn: Stack with Q from outside her range: your Q reaches farther than you think. Do not contest plates: your interest matures later.

→ Caitlyn
ZeriSmolder vs Zeri Skill matchup

Why Zeri counters Smolder: An asymmetric scaling race: your stacks against her items. Late game your execute cleans up what she chases.

How to play Smolder into Zeri: Mirror-farm without risks. In late fights your R executes the fleeing targets: play the closer, not the opener.

→ Zeri
VayneSmolder vs Vayne Skill matchup

Why Vayne counters Smolder: Two different scalings: she grows by items, you by Qs. Your poke bothers her more than hers bothers you.

How to play Smolder into Vayne: Constant Q poke while stacking: double profit. Late game, execute with R from outside Condemn range.

→ Vayne

Who to play with Smolder — best team synergies

The champions Smolder works best alongside on the Wild Rift China server, lane by lane, with the reason each pairing works.

Best Baron partners for Smolder

Smolder + Malphite Best pairing

Every ability that lands on a champion is a Dragon Practice (P) stack: with Unstoppable Force (R) freezing three or four of them in the air, one rotation of Super Scorcher Breath (Q) and Achooo! (W) hands you the stacks of ten minutes of poking.

Smolder + Shen Best pairing

Your card says the problem is the first minutes: Stand United (R) shields you from anywhere on the map and drops Shen into bot as early as level 5, and Shadow Dash (E) taunts the diver who would otherwise shut your lane down before 25 stacks.

Smolder + Ornn Strong

Your stacks arrive before your items do: from level 7 Living Forge (P) lets you buy without walking home, so you never trade a wave for a shopping trip. And Brittle from Bellows Breath (W) adds 30% to any crowd control - more time where your Q cannot miss.

Smolder + Gnar Strong

GNAR! (R) slams the group into a wall and the slow becomes a full stun: stuck and clumped is the state where MMOOOMMMM! (R) executes instead of merely scaring them. Before that Gnar holds his lane on his own, and time is all you are asking for.

Smolder + K'Sante Situational

Worth it against teams with one real diver: All Out (R) grabs him and hurls him away from the spot you are shooting from, and Footwork (E) hands you a shield when he reaches you. Against a comp that collapses on you three at a time, he removes one.

Best Jungle partners for Smolder

Smolder + Warwick Best pairing

One second of Infinite Duress (R) is a target that cannot move and cannot answer: you fit Achooo! (W) and Super Scorcher Breath (Q) into it and walk away with two stacks plus the kill. And Blood Hunt (W) calls him to bot the moment someone drops below half.

Smolder + Amumu Strong

Curse of the Sad Mummy (R) is a wide 1.5-second AoE stun: with two or three enemies frozen every cast of yours connects, and every connected cast is a permanent stack. Bandage Toss (Q) opens that same fight without you having to step up.

Smolder + Rammus Strong

For the first ten minutes you are the weakest champion in the game, and Powerball (Q) reaches bot faster than anyone else. When they do jump you, Frenzying Taunt (E) forces them to hit Rammus instead, and the lane picks up where you left it.

Smolder + Xin Zhao Strong

Crescent Guard (R) knocks back everyone except his marked target and blocks ranged damage: it clears the ground you are standing on instead of engaging. That is the second you need to peel off with Flap, Flap, Flap (E) and go back to casting.

Smolder + Pantheon Situational

Take him when you draw an aggressive bot lane: Shield Vault (W) stuns and Comet Spear (Q) closes, so at level 3 you win a 2v2 you lose on your own. But he is an early-game jungler: if he does not convert, later he adds nothing your stacks are not already doing.

Best Mid partners for Smolder

Smolder + Galio Best pairing

Hero's Entrance (R) does the two things you lack at the same time: it shields you from across the map in the minutes when everything kills you, and it lands a knock-up on whoever is on top of you. That grounded group is also the clean window for MMOOOMMMM! (R).

Smolder + Orianna Strong

Command: Protect (E) gives you a shield and bonus resistances and moves the ball to where you stand, so Orianna's damage zone defends your position instead of hers. Command: Shockwave (R) pulls them into one spot - that is where Super Scorcher Breath (Q) hits more than one.

Smolder + Annie Strong

With Pyromania (P) charged, Annie's next spell is a guaranteed stun rather than a dodgeable skillshot: the target stands still and you bank two landed abilities instead of risking a trade. Summon: Tibbers (R) keeps swinging even after she goes down.

Smolder + Twisted Fate Strong

Your card says ganks and dives are what delay the stacks: Destiny (R) reveals the entire enemy team, so you see the jungler before he arrives and stay on the wave instead of playing back. The second cast teleports him into bot to defend you.

Smolder + Nasus Situational

In China Nasus is a mid laner, and only one of his buttons matters to you: Wither (W) strips the movement and attack speed of whoever reached you, which is the only way you die. In lane he gives you nothing, though - he is busy stacking his Q.

Best Support partners for Smolder

Smolder + Karma Best pairing

Long-range poke lanes tax every stacking attempt you make: Inner Flame (Q) answers from outside their range and empowered Inspire (E) gives you shield and speed to step back in instead of healing behind tower. Focused Resolve (W) roots anyone who walks up.

Smolder + Sona Best pairing

You do not have to win lane, you have to stay in it: Aria of Perseverance (W) patches you up every wave and Song of Celerity (E) keeps you out of skillshots while you keep chipping with Super Scorcher Breath (Q). Then Crescendo (R) freezes a whole group and opens your window.

Smolder + Thresh Strong

Death Sentence (Q) hands you a target dragged in and stunned for a second and a half: that is two landed abilities and two stacks every time the hook connects. And the Dark Passage (W) lantern shields you and pulls you out of the dive that sends you home.

Smolder + Braum Strong

Your stated weakness is lanes that hit you from outside your range: Unbreakable (E) intercepts those projectiles and cuts 35% off whatever gets through, so you step up to collect stacks instead of healing back. Winter's Bite (Q) slows whoever walks off.

Smolder + Nami Strong

Ebb and Flow (W) keeps you on the wave through the minutes when you cannot trade, and Aqua Prison (Q) into Tidal Wave (R) is a chain nobody walks out of: two knock-ups back to back is every ability you can cast, and all of them land.

Smolder + Lulu Situational

She covers your hole late, not early: Whimsy (W) polymorphs the diver and Rampant Growth (R) knocks him off while adding health. But she brings no poke and no hook, so your lane is silent in the exact minutes that decide your stacks: pick her against assassins.

How to play Smolder — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Smolder, the Fiery Fledgling, is a scaling Marksman in Wild Rift built almost entirely around momentum: every ability that lands on an enemy champion stacks Dragon Practice, slowly turning a soft early laner into a monstrous mixed physical/magic damage carry with a genuine execute by the late game. He isn't a mechanically flashy pick — he's a patience pick, rewarding players who can survive the first several levels and keep landing safe pokes so the stacks (and the power spikes at 25, 100, and 175) arrive on schedule.

Strengths

  • Snowballs like few other Marksmen: Dragon Practice stacks off any ability that hits a champion, and crossing 25, 100, and 175 stacks turns Super Scorcher Breath into a wider, harder-hitting true-damage execute.
  • Q and W form a safe poke duo — Super Scorcher Breath chips from range while Achooo! slows and chain-explodes on a champion hit — so he keeps building stacks even without committing to an all-in.
  • Flap, Flap, Flap grants terrain-crossing mobility plus five automatic hits on the lowest-HP target nearby, letting him kite backward while still punishing anyone who overextends.
  • MMOOOMMMM! is both an execution tool and a survival tool: it hits hardest and slows at its center, and standing inside his own flame heals him for a solid chunk of health.

Weaknesses

  • Genuinely weak early: aggressive all-in laners like Draven or Lucian punish nearly every trade long before he's anywhere near a meaningful stack count.
  • Long-range poke lanes (a Caitlyn-style matchup) tax every stacking attempt from beyond his own range, turning lane into a slow, expensive grind.
  • Needs uninterrupted reps to function — ganks, dives, or heavy lane pressure that shut down safe trading directly delay the stacks his entire kit is waiting on.
  • Brings little peel or utility to his team — his kit is almost pure damage, so he can't protect himself or his backline if the enemy collapses onto them.

Combos

  • W → Q → AA: Achooo! slows the target — and chains a bonus explosion (plus a stack) if it lands on a champion — then Super Scorcher Breath and auto-attacks punish someone who can no longer walk away.
  • Q → AA → E: poke with Super Scorcher Breath, follow with an auto-attack, then use Flap, Flap, Flap's speed boost and automatic bombardment to close the gap on a fleeing, low-health target.
  • R → Q/W: drop MMOOOMMMM! onto a grouped enemy team to force them out of the flame (or punish whoever stands still), then clean up survivors with Q and W as your stacks and cooldowns come back.

Skill order: Q > W > E (max R whenever available)

Early game

Play for safe pokes, not all-ins: use Super Scorcher Breath's range to chip the enemy laner and last-hit minions, and take every low-risk chance to land an ability on the enemy champion, since each hit is a permanent Dragon Practice stack even in a losing lane. Respect his early damage deficit against aggressive all-in laners — don't extend trades or overstay a push before Flap, Flap, Flap gives you a real escape tool. Keep an eye on your stack count: 25 and 100 stacks are real power spikes worth fighting around the moment you cross them.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

Once he's stacked, Smolder fights from max range, weaving Super Scorcher Breath and Achooo! into the fight to keep both damage and stacks flowing, and using Flap, Flap, Flap to reposition around terrain or peel away from divers — its automatic bombardment still punishes whoever is lowest on health, so the cast is rarely wasted even on a repositioning play. Save MMOOOMMMM! for a grouped, low-health enemy team or as a zone-control tool that scatters a fight in your favor, and stand inside your own flame when it's safe to do so for the 100-health heal instead of only kiting on the fringe. Prioritize sustained, safe damage over a greedy dive — his win condition is uptime and stack count, not one big cooldown.

Pro tips

  • Treat every landed ability as currency, not just a poke: even a small trade against a farming enemy is a permanent Dragon Practice stack, so look for safe chances to hit them constantly, not only during all-ins.
  • Time Flap, Flap, Flap for when a real kill is actually in range — its bombardment prioritizes champions, but don't burn the cooldown early on jungle camps or minions if an enemy is about to walk into range instead.
  • Itemize with crit chance and crit damage in mind, not just raw AD or mana — Q's damage is explicitly boosted by both (up to +65.25%), so working crit into a build alongside staples like Muramana or Trinity Force pays off on your poke, not only your auto-attacks.
