Who counters Lucian — hardest matchups & how to play them

The toughest lane matchups for Lucian on the Wild Rift China server, with why each is hard and exactly how to play it.

SennaLucian vs Senna Unfavorable

Why Senna counters Lucian: She kites you with range and roots, and every dash of yours gifts her a soul to collect.

How to play Lucian into Senna: All-in during the first 3 levels, when her damage is nearly zero. Dash AFTER her W, never before. Close the lane out by taking towers.

→ Senna
AsheLucian vs Ashe Unfavorable

Why Ashe counters Lucian: A permanent slow on your only dash: one hit and your mobility becomes a memory.

How to play Lucian into Ashe: Enter and exit ONLY with the dash ready for the way out. Trade while her Volley is on cooldown: she is fragile, punish it.

→ Ashe
VayneLucian vs Vayne Skill matchup

Why Vayne counters Lucian: The lane is yours, the late game is hers: the classic of ADC classics. Every plate you take now is one minute less for her later.

How to play Lucian into Vayne: Double-tap her on every exposed cs. Look for the 2v2 early. In the late game you flank from the side: never face her head-on.

→ Vayne
EzrealLucian vs Ezreal Skill matchup

Why Ezreal counters Lucian: Double-tap versus blink: you dominate him if you force the defensive E out every single trade.

How to play Lucian into Ezreal: E, attack, Q, attack and out — every time his Q misses. When his E is on cooldown, all-in without a second thought.

→ Ezreal
NilahLucian vs Nilah Skill matchup

Why Nilah counters Lucian: Her W dodges your attacks mid-double-tap and the R all-in wraps around you.

How to play Lucian into Nilah: During her W trade with abilities: Q and E are not basic attacks. Keep the early lead: before 2 items she is blunt.

→ Nilah

Who to play with Lucian — best team synergies

The champions Lucian works best alongside on the Wild Rift China server, lane by lane, with the reason each pairing works.

Best Baron partners for Lucian

Lucian + Shen Best pairing

Your only defensive tool is the bonus damage Lightslinger (P) hands you when an ally shields you: Stand United (R) switches it on and keeps you standing in the same instant, from anywhere on the map. Shadow Dash (E) taunts the assassin who reached you.

Lucian + Malphite Best pairing

The Culling (R) locks your facing for the whole channel and mobile targets simply walk out of the beam: Unstoppable Force (R) is the answer, a whole group pinned to the ground. And hard crowd control landing near you also charges Lightslinger (P)'s bonus damage.

Lucian + Ornn Strong

Your card says you play toward Essence Reaver, not toward levels: from level 7 Living Forge (P) hands you shopping from anywhere on the map and that spike lands sooner. Brittle from Bellows Breath (W) adds 30% to any lockdown - extra seconds of beam time.

Lucian + K'Sante Strong

You own no peel at all: All Out (R) grabs the diver and hurls him out of the fight, rooted and away from his team. And Footwork (E) can dash to you and leave you the same shield, which on top of saving you switches on Lightslinger (P)'s charges.

Lucian + Poppy Situational

Worth it against dash-based comps: Relentless Pursuit (E) is a short straight-line dash with no immunity, so the first one who reaches you kills you. Steadfast Presence (W) roots him the instant he commits. Against a team that walks at you, she does little.

Best Jungle partners for Lucian

Lucian + Warwick Best pairing

The declared hole in The Culling (R) is that mobile targets just walk out of the beam: Infinite Duress (R) suppresses for a full second, the one state in which they cannot. And hard crowd control next to you charges Lightslinger (P)'s bonus damage.

Lucian + Pantheon Best pairing

You run on the same clock: neither of you scales, and your own card says end it before the 25-minute mark. Shield Vault (W) is a point-and-click stun that hands you a motionless body for The Culling (R), and Grand Starfall (R) drops into bot from range while your burst is at its peak.

Lucian + Rammus Strong

You have no way to shake off whoever reaches you: Frenzying Taunt (E) forces him to hit Rammus while you keep channelling. Powerball (Q) gets down to bot fast, and bot is where your all-in windows actually exist.

Lucian + Vi Strong

Cease and Desist (R) is unstoppable and point-and-click: it pins their carry exactly where The Culling (R)'s beam can hold her. And the 65 movement speed Ardent Blaze (W) hands any ally who follows up on the mark is what she needs while Vault Breaker (Q) is down.

Lucian + Kindred Situational

The Culling (R) forces you to stand still in a fight where you should not be: Lamb's Respite (R) is three seconds where nobody inside the circle can die, so the whole channel goes off. It matters in games decided by one fight over Baron or Dragon, not in lane.

Best Mid partners for Lucian

Lucian + Galio Best pairing

Hero's Entrance (R) does three things you need with one button: it shields you from across the map - and the shield switches on Lightslinger (P)'s charges - it knocks up everyone standing on you, and it hands you back the still window The Culling (R) needs.

Lucian + Orianna Best pairing

Command: Protect (E) gives you a shield plus armour and magic resist - the only defence you own - and that shield also charges Lightslinger (P)'s bonus damage. Command: Shockwave (R) drags them into a single point, right in front of The Culling (R)'s beam.

Lucian + Lissandra Strong

Frozen Tomb (R) freezes whoever already reached you in place, which with no peel of your own is the difference between living and not. Ring of Frost (W) roots the group around her: targets that do not walk out of The Culling (R)'s beam.

Lucian + Annie Strong

With Pyromania (P) charged, Annie's next spell is a guaranteed stun instead of a dodgeable skillshot: the free second you need to open with Piercing Light (Q) and close with The Culling (R) always arrives. Summon: Tibbers (R) keeps hitting even if she goes down.

Lucian + Kennen Situational

Slicing Maelstrom (R) keeps reapplying Mark of the Storm (P) and stunning everyone still inside it: the cleanest way to hold a group inside The Culling (R)'s beam. But Kennen has to jump into the middle, and for a carry with no peel he leaves nothing behind.

Best Support partners for Lucian

Lucian + Braum Best pairing

Braum marks with Winter's Bite (Q), then it is allied hits that load Concussive Blows (P): Lightslinger (P) fires two bolts on every attack after an ability, so four stacks and the stun land in two attacks. And Unbreakable (E) blocks the projectiles aimed at you.

Lucian + Nami Best pairing

Lightslinger (P) turns an allied heal into bonus damage on your next attacks, and Ebb and Flow (W) hands you one every trade. Then Aqua Prison (Q) into Tidal Wave (R) is two knock-ups back to back: the only way nobody walks out of The Culling (R).

Lucian + Sona Strong

Every cast of hers opens an aura: Hymn of Valor (Q) feeds you attack damage that Lightslinger (P)'s second bolt carries too, Aria of Perseverance (W) heals you and switches on the passive's bonus, and Crescendo (R) stuns the group exactly for your beam.

Lucian + Karma Strong

Empowered Inspire (E) is a shield plus a burst of speed: the shield charges Lightslinger (P)'s bonus damage and the speed covers the seconds when Relentless Pursuit (E) is down. Focused Resolve (W) roots, and a rooted target does not leave The Culling (R).

Lucian + Soraka Strong

Your only defence is the bonus the passive gives you when an ally heals you: Astral Infusion (W) does it every few seconds and Wish (R) does it from anywhere on the map. Equinox (E) silences a dash and then roots whoever stayed inside - the peel you do not own.

Lucian + Milio Situational

Take him against comps built on hard crowd control, which is the thing that switches Relentless Pursuit (E) off: Breath of Life (R) cleanses roots and stuns off the whole team, and Warm Hugs (E) shields you, arming Lightslinger (P)'s bonus. Elsewhere there are stronger supports.

How to play Lucian — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Lucian, the Purifier, is one of Wild Rift's most tempo-driven marksmen: his Lightslinger passive turns every ability cast into a free double-shot on his next basic attack, so plain auto-attacks double as burst physical damage. Rather than scaling into a stationary late-game hypercarry, he plays as an aggressive skirmisher who dashes in and out of range with Relentless Pursuit (E), chaining abilities into attacks to win short trades and pick fights. It's a moderate-difficulty marksman kit that rewards active ability-weaving and sharp positioning over passive farming.

Strengths

  • Lightslinger (Passive) turns every ability cast into a bonus second shot on his next basic attack - 35% AD as physical damage, 100% against minions, and able to crit - giving Lucian some of the highest early burst windows of any marksman in the game.
  • Relentless Pursuit (E) is a short dash whose cooldown drops by 1 second on every hit and 2 seconds against champions, so he can weave in and out of range far more often than most ranged carries.
  • Ardent Blaze (W) explodes for 75 magic damage and reveals plus marks the target for 6 seconds, handing 65 bonus movement speed to any ally - including Lucian himself - who follows up damage on the mark, making it a real pick and skirmish tool rather than just laning poke.
  • The Culling (R) keeps dealing damage even while Lucian repositions, since Relentless Pursuit can be cast mid-channel without cancelling the ultimate, letting him kite instead of standing still and eating a whole team's response.

Weaknesses

  • Very fragile - his only defensive tool is the bonus damage his passive grants after an ally shields or heals him, so with no self-peel of his own, any assassin or burst mage that closes the distance can delete him in one rotation.
  • Relentless Pursuit (E) is a short, straight-line dash with no untargetability, so hard crowd control shuts down his entire mobility kit the moment it lands - exactly why permanent slows and roots like Ashe or Senna are such rough matchups.
  • The Culling (R) locks him into a facing direction for the whole channel; mobile targets can simply walk out of the beam, and any stun or knock-up cuts the damage short.
  • His whole identity is tempo and burst rather than raw stat-scaling, so unlike a true late-game hypercarry like Vayne, he wants to end the game early rather than let it stretch past the 25-30 minute mark.

Combos

  • Piercing Light (Q) into an empowered autoattack, then Relentless Pursuit (E): poke down the line to prime Lightslinger, and dash in just as the free second shot lands so the burst and the gap-close happen almost together.
  • Ardent Blaze (W) onto the target, empowered autoattack, then The Culling (R): mark the target for the reveal and the movement speed bonus, cash in the follow-up hit, then channel the ultimate into a target that's already lit up and can't hide.
  • The Culling (R), weaving Relentless Pursuit (E) mid-channel: open the ultimate down a chokepoint or lane, then tap E partway through to sidestep an incoming skillshot or dive attempt without ever losing the DPS channel.
  • Relentless Pursuit (E) to disengage, then Piercing Light (Q) backward: dash away from a bad trade and still fire a line of damage back down the lane, so Lucian can keep dealing damage while retreating, not only while all-inning.

Skill order: Q > W > E (grab one early point in E for the extra mobility; level R whenever it's available)

Early game

Lane behind Piercing Light (Q): it's an 80-damage, wall-to-wall poke that also primes Lightslinger, so every safe poke into a trade doubles as a free empowered autoattack. Look for all-in windows once Ardent Blaze (W) can mark the enemy laner and Relentless Pursuit (E) is up, since landing hits refunds E's cooldown and keeps an escape ready for the follow-up trade. Play patiently until Essence Reaver completes - that's the timing that turns Lucian from a poking laner into a genuine skirmish threat, with Magnetic Blaster right behind it adding attack speed and extra on-hit magic damage to every Lightslinger proc. Because his only 'shield' comes from an ally's heal or shield triggering the passive, avoid diving alone into vision you don't control and let your jungler create the openings instead.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

By the mid game, Lucian wants to fight from an angle rather than head-on: fire Ardent Blaze (W) at a flanker or an isolated backline target so the mark's reveal and movement speed bonus let the whole team pile on. In the middle of a fight, channel The Culling (R) - each bolt hits for 35 physical damage, up to 759 total in a single channel - into whoever is easiest to keep inside the beam, whether that's an overextended tank or a carry you've already isolated, and weave Relentless Pursuit (E) mid-channel to dodge incoming crowd control without losing DPS uptime. Pick up Mortal Reminder or Lord Dominik's Regards the moment the enemy stacks healing or shields, and lean on Blade of the Ruined King if you need extra dueling sustain against tankier lineups. Positioning decides most of his fights: staying just out of engage range wins them, getting caught in it loses them instantly.

Pro tips

  • Recast Relentless Pursuit (E) mid-Culling (R) purely to dodge an incoming all-in - the ultimate keeps channeling and dealing damage, you're only repositioning, so treat E as a defensive tool even in the middle of your own ultimate.
  • Track the bonus-damage state from your passive - up to 4 charges of +26 magic damage after an ally's heal or shield, or after a nearby enemy gets hit by hard crowd control - and delay your next two attacks half a second when you see it trigger, so the extra damage lands on a champion instead of getting burned on a minion wave.
  • Poke with Piercing Light (Q) in lane even when you don't need the damage - every champion hit shaves extra time off Relentless Pursuit (E), so the dash is far more likely to be ready right when a real fight actually breaks out.
