Who counters Gwen — hardest matchups & how to play them

The toughest lane matchups for Gwen on the Wild Rift China server, with why each is hard and exactly how to play it.

WarwickGwen vs Warwick Unfavorable

Why Warwick counters Gwen: Sustain against your poke, fear that interrupts your charged Q, and fight scaling that ignores the Mist: he just walks in.

How to play Gwen into Warwick: Trade while his W is not active: below 50% health he runs faster, careful. The Mist stops abilities, not his E: walk away during the fear channel.

→ Warwick
MordekaiserGwen vs Mordekaiser Unfavorable

Why Mordekaiser counters Gwen: His R drags you to the death realm without your Mist pre-placed: cut off from your denial tool you are just a pair of scissors.

How to play Gwen into Mordekaiser: You CAN cast the Mist INSIDE his R: do it the moment you land. Hug him to dodge his full Q: his damage rewards mid-range, deny it.

→ Mordekaiser
FioraGwen vs Fiora Skill matchup

Why Fiora counters Gwen: Riposte versus Mist: two denials sizing each other up. She wins the micro-trades, you win the long windows.

How to play Gwen into Fiora: Charged Q ONLY after her Riposte is spent. In long duels your percent damage overtakes her: drag the trades out.

→ Fiora
JaxGwen vs Jax Skill matchup

Why Jax counters Gwen: His Counter Strike blocks basic attacks but NOT your Q: it is magic damage and goes through. It comes down to cooldowns: R versus R.

How to play Gwen into Jax: Q straight through his active Counter Strike: full damage. Mist on his stun: without an entry, his scaling stays theoretical.

→ Jax
AatroxGwen vs Aatrox Skill matchup

Why Aatrox counters Gwen: Your percent-damage scissors against his Q sustain: the Mist denies his outer-edge Qs, but enter on the wrong beat and he wins.

How to play Gwen into Aatrox: Mist on his third Q, the knock-up one. Trade in the gap between his Qs: you get 2 good seconds for every 10 of his.

→ Aatrox

Who to play with Gwen — best team synergies

The champions Gwen works best alongside on the Wild Rift China server, lane by lane, with the reason each pairing works.

Best Baron partners for Gwen

Gwen + Ornn Best pairing

Your page says your spike comes from items rather than levels, and Living Forge (P) lets you buy and upgrade without ever walking home. Meanwhile Brittle from Bellows Breath (W) stretches crowd control by 30% and adds max-health magic damage on top.

Gwen + Singed Best pairing

You need time on target to stack Snip Snip! (Q), and Mega Adhesive (W) into Fling (E) is the chain that gives it to you. His poison under Insanity Potion (R) also applies grievous wounds, the answer to the duelists who out-heal your poke.

Gwen + Malphite Strong

Snip Snip! (Q) wants four autos before it really pays: Unstoppable Force (R) holds their whole team in the air and hands them to you, while Ground Slam (E) cuts the attack speed of anyone punishing you while you stack.

Gwen + K'Sante Strong

All Out (R) drags a target away from their team and locks them into a duel, and you are the champion who does not lose that duel. Careful though: in Prime Form he gives up health and resistances, so the damage in those fifteen seconds has to be yours.

Gwen + Gnar Situational

It depends on terrain: GNAR! (R) into a wall stuns the whole group and opens the full window to stack Snip Snip! (Q) untouched. In open ground it just throws them away from you, which is the opposite of what you want.

Best Mid partners for Gwen

Gwen + Galio Best pairing

Hallowed Mist (W) is your only defensive tool, and if they catch you before it is down you have nothing at all. Hero's Entrance (R) lands on you from anywhere on the map, knocks up everyone around you and shields exactly that hole.

Gwen + Lissandra Strong

Ring of Frost (W) roots and Frozen Tomb (R) freezes right after: close to three motionless seconds on one target, which is the four autos Snip Snip! (Q) needs to land as true damage instead of a poke.

Gwen + Nasus Strong

Your page says self-healing duelists beat you: Wither (W) strips that target's movement and attack speed for a very long time, so he neither out-heals you nor walks out of your range. Nasus is a mid laner on the China server.

Gwen + Orianna Strong

Command: Protect (E) attached to you is the shield and resistances you lack while Hallowed Mist (W) is on cooldown, and Command: Shockwave (R) pulls the group into one spot: A Thousand Cuts (P) scales on health, so more bodies means more damage.

Gwen + Kennen Situational

Niche but real: Slicing Maelstrom (R) keeps reapplying Mark of the Storm (P) and the third mark stuns, so the group stands still while you stack. He is barely picked, though, and without his ultimate he brings no lockdown at all.

Best Duo (ADC) partners for Gwen

Gwen + Varus Best pairing

He gives you the two things your page asks for: Chain of Corruption (R) roots and spreads, so you get the seconds you need to stack Snip Snip! (Q), and Hail of Arrows (E) cuts the healing of the duelists who otherwise outlast you.

Gwen + Ashe Strong

Skip 'n Slash (E) is your only way in: Frost Shot (P) slows on every hit, so the target stops walking out of your range, and Enchanted Crystal Arrow (R) freezes them outright while you are still closing the distance.

Gwen + Jhin Strong

Deadly Flourish (W) roots anyone an ally has just damaged, and the opening needle of Needlework (R) arms it from range. A rooted target is time on target, which is the only thing you actually need.

Gwen + Xayah Strong

You peel for nobody, so you want a carry who saves herself: Featherstorm (R) makes her untargetable without asking you for anything. And three feathers from Bladecaller (E) root for 1.25 seconds the target you are already shredding.

Gwen + Yunara Situational

Arc of Judgment (W) leaves a near-total slow, and inside it nobody escapes your range while you stack. She is fragile with no escape though, and you bring no peel: if they collapse on the two of you, you both die.

Best Support partners for Gwen

Gwen + Morgana Best pairing

Dark Binding (Q) roots for a full two seconds, which is exactly the window that turns Snip Snip! (Q) from a poke into an execute. And Black Shield (E) eats the crowd control that catches you before Hallowed Mist (W) is down, which is how you die.

Gwen + Maokai Strong

Twisted Advance (W) and Nature's Grasp (R) are two separate roots inside the same fight, and his page says they are worth nothing without someone to convert them: that someone is you, who lives on time spent on target.

Gwen + Leona Strong

Zenith Blade (E), Shield of Daybreak (Q) and Solar Flare (R) chained together hold a target longer than any other support can: long enough for four autos, Snip Snip! (Q) and all three Needlework (R) casts on the same body.

Gwen + Karma Strong

An Inspire (E) empowered by Mantra (P) hands you a shield and movement speed as you come in with Skip 'n Slash (E), covering the exact moment Hallowed Mist (W) is not there. Focused Resolve (W) meanwhile roots the target you need to stay on.

Gwen + Lulu Situational

Whimsy (W) polymorphs whoever is jumping you for a second while the Mist is down, and Rampant Growth (R) adds health where you have no defenses. She is built to sit on the carry though, so take her only when you are the main threat.

How to play Gwen — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Gwen is a magic-damage Fighter in Wild Rift built around percent-health shredding and extended 1v1 duels rather than quick trades. She stacks Snip Snip! through auto-attacks into a burst that finishes with true damage, ducks behind Hallowed Mist to become untargetable from outside its ring, and threatens from range with the three-stage Needlework ultimate. Played mostly Top (with a growing Jungle presence) in the China server meta, she's less a teamfight enabler than a flanking duelist who isolates one target and refuses to lose that fight.

Strengths

  • Percent-max-HP magic damage on her passive and Q's true-damage snips lets her scale into armor stackers and tanks just as well as squishies.
  • Hallowed Mist makes her untargetable to anything outside the ring, turning point-and-click engages and executes into wasted cooldowns if she drops it before they land.
  • Skip 'n Slash refunds half its cooldown on the first empowered hit, letting her chain dashes, bonus range and bonus magic damage far more often than the base cooldown suggests.
  • Needlework is a flexible three-cast ultimate: poke and slow from max range with just the first needle, or dump all three casts for a duel-ending burst.

Weaknesses

  • Everything scales off stacking Snip Snip! through auto-attacks first, so she's noticeably weaker in short, immediate trades before those stacks or her item spikes come online.
  • Her only real defensive tool is the Mist itself — get caught before it's up, or get forced out of its radius, and she has nothing but a short dash to escape.
  • Sustained lifesteal duelists (a Warwick-style match-up) can out-heal her poke and force the Mist down early, before she's ready to commit.
  • Brings little hard CC or peel for her team, so once her own target is dead or out of reach she has limited teamfight impact left to offer.

Combos

  • Auto-attack x2-4 to stack Snip Snip! -> Q -> Skip 'n Slash — bait or land a couple of autos first so the final snip hits its heavy execute-tier damage instead of firing Q with no stacks.
  • Hallowed Mist -> Skip 'n Slash -> Q — drop the Mist to force a commitment, dash in behind it for the extra range and magic damage, then unload the fully-stacked snips.
  • Needlework 1st cast from range -> reposition -> 2nd/3rd cast — tag and slow with a single needle to open, then decide whether to dump the remaining two casts into the same target or hold them.
  • Skip 'n Slash -> Auto -> Q -> Needlework — the full all-in string once a target is already low: dash on top of them, empower the first auto, snip for true damage, then close it out with needles.

Skill order: Q > E > W (max R whenever available)

Early game

Poke with auto-attacks and Skip 'n Slash's empowered hits to keep Snip Snip! stacked for free — the extra range and attack speed during the dash window already let her out-trade most Fighters at range. Hold Hallowed Mist for the exact moment the enemy commits a dash, stun or all-in instead of using it reactively; dropping it early just wastes their whole engage on a target that's no longer there. Because her real spike comes from AP item completion rather than pure levels, farm safely behind the Mist and only force full trades once Q is stacked or the opponent has already burned their key engage tool.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

From mid game on, Gwen plays more like a flanking duelist than a frontline Fighter: dash in with Skip 'n Slash, drop the Mist the instant someone tries to lock her down, and shred through stacked Q snips plus Needlework's true-damage procs. Save the ultimate's later casts for either finishing a fleeing low-health target from range or slowing a whole group as they funnel through a chokepoint, rather than always dumping all three on cooldown. Because her damage scales off percent health she can threaten the frontline in a pinch, but she wins fights fastest by staying on divers and carries where the burst actually closes it out.

Pro tips

  • Time the Mist proactively — dropping it half a second before a hard CC or point-and-click ultimate denies the whole tool, but dropping it after the CC already landed does nothing.
  • Treat Snip Snip!'s stacks as a resource: four autos before releasing it roughly doubles the snip count and damage compared to firing it with zero stacks up, so don't panic-cast it the moment it's off cooldown.
  • Spend Needlework's charges deliberately — a single opening needle only costs you that cast, so there's no need to dump the whole ultimate at once if the fight is still developing.
