Who counters Irelia — hardest matchups & how to play them

The toughest lane matchups for Irelia on the Wild Rift China server, with why each is hard and exactly how to play it.

RenektonIrelia vs Renekton Unfavorable

Why Renekton counters Irelia: His point-and-click stun comes out exactly when your passive is charged, and his fury trades win the first 5 levels without appeal.

How to play Irelia into Renekton: Do not charge your passive in front of him: he respects it and waits. Dash through minions to dodge his W and trade only when his fury is empty.

→ Renekton
MalphiteIrelia vs Malphite Unfavorable

Why Malphite counters Irelia: Armor against a basic-attack champion: your resets spin uselessly against a stone wall.

How to play Irelia into Malphite: He is not a target: he is terrain. Farm with resets, reach fights healthy, and use your mobility to fly onto the enemy carries.

→ Malphite
TeemoIrelia vs Teemo Unfavorable

Why Teemo counters Irelia: The blind cancels your attacks and the poison drains your sustain: your entire pattern dies inside one mushroom.

How to play Irelia into Teemo: Q from minion to minion all the way TO him and stun before the blind comes out. All-in or nothing: he wins every half-trade.

→ Teemo
JaxIrelia vs Jax Skill matchup

Why Jax counters Irelia: The duel of duelists: his Counter Strike against your marked stun. Every trade is a two-second chess game.

How to play Irelia into Jax: Throw your E stun DURING his Counter Strike: it is not a basic attack, it goes through. Dash away when he activates it and re-enter at its end: win on points.

→ Jax
FioraIrelia vs Fiora Skill matchup

Why Fiora counters Irelia: Her Riposte waits for your telegraphed stun: the duel is decided by whoever spends their ace first.

How to play Irelia into Fiora: Fake the E to make her waste Riposte, then commit with your resets. Do not extend trades once your marks are gone.

→ Fiora

Who to play with Irelia — best team synergies

The champions Irelia works best alongside on the Wild Rift China server, lane by lane, with the reason each pairing works.

Best Jungle partners for Irelia

Irelia + Amumu Best pairing

Curse of the Sad Mummy (R) pins the group where it stands for a second and a half: you drop Vanguard's Edge (R) on top and mark all of them at once, and from there every Bladesurge (Q) into a marked target refreshes. That is the dash chain you never get without a mark.

Irelia + Jarvan IV Strong

Cataclysm (R) seals a target inside a ring with you: you are a duelist who wins long exchanges, and in there nobody can hold you at arm's length, which is the only way you lose. Dragon Strike (Q) through Demacian Standard (E) knocks them up before they think about leaving.

Irelia + Nunu & Willump Strong

A fully grown Biggest Snowball Ever! (W) rolls into the front line and knocks all of it up at once, then Absolute Zero (R) keeps it slowed in the same spot: a clumped, motionless group is the exact condition for Vanguard's Edge (R) to mark more than one target.

Irelia + Warwick Strong

Infinite Duress (R) is point-and-click and suppresses for a full second: against a champion who keeps slipping away, that second is what guarantees Flawless Duet (E) lands, and with it the mark. And with the mark, Bladesurge (Q) comes straight back up.

Irelia + Rammus Situational

Frenzying Taunt (E) forces a carry to stand still and swing at him: against a team that holds you at arm's length, your stated limit, it is the only way you get a clean duel. He brings no damage though, so if the game isn't about kiting you want something else.

Best Mid partners for Irelia

Irelia + Galio Best pairing

Your plan is to flank instead of walking in, and it ends the moment the first CC chain catches you. Hero's Entrance (R) lands on you from anywhere on the map, knocks up everyone around you and shields you exactly as the burst was about to hit.

Irelia + Orianna Best pairing

Command: Shockwave (R) yanks the enemy team into a single spot: that is where Vanguard's Edge (R) marks four bodies instead of one and the Bladesurge (Q) chain actually starts. Command: Protect (E) attached to you adds a shield and resistances while you come in from the side.

Irelia + Lissandra Strong

Flawless Duet (E) travels slowly and is easy to read: Frozen Tomb (R) is point-and-click and undodgeable, so it freezes the carry and buys you the time to place both blades. Guaranteed mark, and on that mark Bladesurge (Q) resets right on top of her.

Irelia + Taliyah Strong

Two walls in the same fight: Weaver's Wall (R) cuts the enemy team in half and Vanguard's Edge (R) closes the other side, so whoever is stuck with you gets no help at all. Unraveled Earth (E) meanwhile stuns anyone who tries to dash out of the pocket.

Irelia + Zoe Situational

Sleepy Trouble Bubble (E) puts a champion you could never walk up to fast asleep. Careful though: the sleep breaks on the first hit, so it is a way to close the gap, not a lockdown - if Bladesurge (Q) connects before your own mark you have wasted half the combo.

Best Duo (ADC) partners for Irelia

Irelia + Ashe Best pairing

You have no ranged tool at all and whoever runs from you is gone: Frost Shot (P) slows on every single hit, so enemy kiting never gets going, and Enchanted Crystal Arrow (R) freezes their carry from half a map away before the fight even starts.

Irelia + Kalista Strong

Fate's Call (R) can, when you are her Oathsworn, launch you into the middle of their team, knocking up everyone you hit: you land with the group clumped, so Vanguard's Edge (R) marks them together. And if the flight goes wrong, the same ability pulls you back out.

Irelia + Jhin Strong

Deadly Flourish (W) turns into a root on anyone who has just taken damage from an ally: your Bladesurge (Q) switches it on by itself. And a rooted target cannot walk out of Flawless Duet (E), which is how the mark reliably lands.

Irelia + Varus Strong

Chain of Corruption (R) roots the first target and spreads to whoever stands next to them: it leaves you a group that is stuck and bunched, exactly the picture Vanguard's Edge (R) wants. Hail of Arrows (E) then cuts the healing on whoever you are finishing.

Irelia + Miss Fortune Situational

Bullet Time (R) only pays off on enemies that cannot move, and the only thing stopping them is you: the Vanguard's Edge (R) wall slows anyone crossing it by 90%. It only works if she channels while you are already deep inside, and not every game allows that.

Best Support partners for Irelia

Irelia + Morgana Best pairing

Your stated weakness is point-and-click crowd control catching you as you go in, and Black Shield (E) cancels it outright. Dark Binding (Q) roots for a full two seconds: more than enough time to place Flawless Duet (E) and get the mark for free.

Irelia + Thresh Strong

Flanking means ending up behind their lines: the Dark Passage (W) lantern is the way back when the flank does not pay. And Death Sentence (Q) rips a carry out from behind the front line - the target your own card puts above everything else.

Irelia + Rell Strong

Magnet Storm (R) drags scattered enemies together, and that is the condition for Vanguard's Edge (R) to mark more than one target and for the Bladesurge (Q) chain not to stop at the first. Shattering Strike (Q) also breaks the shields that would eat your damage.

Irelia + Leona Strong

Zenith Blade (E) roots and pulls her onto the target, Shield of Daybreak (Q) stuns for a second, Solar Flare (R) stretches it further: against a champion who would kite you, that is a chain long enough to arrive, mark, and stay stuck.

Irelia + Sona Situational

She is the highest win rate support on the server and her auras keep you standing while you soak, but she gives you nothing to catch someone who runs and Crescendo (R) arrives late in the fight. Take her when somebody else on the team already brings the lockdown.

How to play Irelia — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Irelia, the Blade Dancer, is a duelist Fighter in Wild Rift who fights with a ring of floating blades instead of a single weapon, mixing physical dash damage with magic damage from her passive and skill hits. She's built to win extended 1v1s and skirmishes, chaining Bladesurge resets off marked or defeated targets while Defiant Dance's uninterruptible channel shrugs off burst. Once her passive is fully stacked and a reset chain gets going, she plays less like a bruiser trading hits and more like a blur that's very hard to pin down.

Strengths

  • A marked or killed target refreshes Bladesurge instantly, letting Irelia chain dashes from enemy to enemy across a skirmish or teamfight once she gets one reset rolling.
  • Defiant Dance's channel cuts incoming damage by 60% and can't be interrupted, giving her a real answer to burst mages and assassins that most Fighters don't have.
  • Bladesurge deals 150% damage to minions and resets off wave kills, so she clears lanes fast and can reposition around the map almost for free.
  • Vanguard's Edge doubles as a nuke and a battlefield-splitting wall, letting her mark, damage, and zone an entire enemy team from a single cast.

Weaknesses

  • Guaranteed, point-and-click crowd control (a Renekton stun is the textbook example) lands right as her passive caps and skips the read Defiant Dance is built to punish.
  • Blind effects and heavy poke undercut her completely, since her sustain and bonus magic damage both depend on skill hits and autos actually landing.
  • She has no ranged tool besides Flawless Duet's throw, so kiting champions and armor-stacked walls like Malphite can keep her at arm's length or shrug off her physical resets.
  • Without a marked target or a kill to refresh Bladesurge, her mobility and damage both drop off hard, leaving her as a fairly ordinary melee fighter.

Combos

  • E into Q, then autos and W — throw Flawless Duet to stun and mark the target, dash in with Bladesurge for the guaranteed reset off the mark, weave in autos for the passive's bonus magic damage, then release Defiant Dance to finish the trade.
  • Q into Q — Bladesurge through a minion or marked champion refreshes the cooldown on a hit or a kill, so a clean read lets her dash through two or three targets in a row to close a gap or clean up a fight.
  • R into E into Q — open a skirmish with Vanguard's Edge to mark grouped enemies and drop the blade wall behind them, stun the priority target with Flawless Duet, then dash onto them with Bladesurge for the free reset.
  • Hold W, then release — charge Defiant Dance the instant an enemy commits their combo to cut the damage by 60%, then release the blade sweep into them once they're out of resources for close to its full bonus damage.

Skill order: Q > E > W (max R whenever available)

Early game

Poke and farm with Bladesurge — its 150% damage to minions clears waves fast, stacks Ionian Fervor, and resets for free repositioning whenever it kills something. Look to land Flawless Duet's stun before committing Bladesurge onto the enemy champion, since hitting a marked target guarantees the reset and heal that fuel her trades; if the throw whiffs, hold back rather than diving in blind. Keep Defiant Dance in reserve for poke or an all-in, but remember it is not a shield: holding it cuts 60% of the damage you take while you charge, and the channel can't be interrupted, which is usually enough to survive a bad trade and swing it back. Once all three basics are online around level 3, look for the first real all-in window, and a completed Trinity Force is usually the point her trades start snowballing.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

From the mid game on, Irelia wants to flank rather than walk into the middle of a 5v5 — open with Vanguard's Edge to mark grouped enemies and drop its blade wall through them, slowing anyone who crosses it by 90%. Chain Bladesurge onto the lowest-health or marked target for an instant reset, then keep dashing kill to kill while her team follows up on the chaos. Save Defiant Dance's channel for whenever a burst combo or CC chain is about to land on her, since surviving a fight is what keeps the reset chain alive; release the sweep only once she's safe to commit further. Marked backline carries are always the priority over the frontline — the wall and slow already handle peeling for her.

Pro tips

  • Aim Bladesurge manually at marked or low-health targets when you can — manual aim prioritizes whichever enemy would refresh the cooldown, and that reset chain is what lets her snowball a fight.
  • Treat Defiant Dance as a defensive tool first and a damage tool second — holding it out against a burst mage or all-in combo can single-handedly win a trade that would otherwise be lost.
  • Double-cast Flawless Duet inside its 3-second window whenever possible — the second blade all but guarantees the stun and mark land even if the first throw gets dodged or blocked.
